Is Your Business Training AI How To Hack You?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot have become part of everyday work. Employees use them to draft emails, summarize documents, write reports, and troubleshoot problems. The productivity gains are real. So are the security risks that most organizations have not addressed.
The Data Leak Problem Is Already Here
In 2023, Samsung engineers pasted proprietary source code into ChatGPT on three separate occasions. The data became part of the model's training set, meaning Samsung's trade secrets were effectively shared with a third-party AI provider with no mechanism for retrieval or deletion.
This is not an isolated incident. Researchers have found that large language models can memorize and later reproduce sensitive data from their training inputs. When your team copies client information, financial data, or internal documents into an AI tool, that data may be stored, processed, and potentially exposed in ways you cannot control.
The Senior Living Risk
Consider this scenario: a caregiver pastes a resident's medical file into ChatGPT to help write a care summary. That single action is a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) violation. The resident's Protected Health Information (PHI) has been transmitted to a third-party system with no Business Associate Agreement (BAA), no encryption guarantees, and no audit trail.
The caregiver was not being careless. They were trying to save time. But without clear policies and training, well-intentioned employees will feed sensitive data into AI tools every day.
What Is a Prompt Injection Attack?
Beyond accidental data leaks, attackers are now exploiting AI tools directly. A prompt injection attack works by embedding hidden instructions inside documents, emails, or web pages that an AI tool processes. When the AI reads the malicious content, it follows the hidden instructions instead of the user's intent.
For example, an attacker could send an email containing invisible text that instructs an AI assistant to forward all subsequent conversation data to an external address. The user sees a normal email. The AI sees a command. This attack vector is new, difficult to detect, and growing rapidly.
Four Steps to Protect Your Organization
- Create an AI usage policy. Define which AI tools are approved, what data can and cannot be entered into them, and the consequences for violations. This policy should be as clear and enforceable as your acceptable use policy for email and internet access.
- Educate your team. Staff need to understand that anything entered into a public AI tool may be stored permanently. Training should include specific examples relevant to their role, especially for staff who handle PHI, financial data, or proprietary information.
- Use secure AI platforms. Enterprise versions of AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 and Azure OpenAI Service offer data isolation, compliance controls, and BAA availability. Public consumer versions of these same tools offer none of those protections.
- Monitor AI usage across your network. Implement controls that provide visibility into which AI tools employees are accessing. If you cannot see the traffic, you cannot manage the risk.
AI Is Not the Enemy. Unmanaged AI Is.
The organizations that benefit most from AI will be the ones that deploy it with the same governance they apply to every other technology: clear policies, proper training, secure platforms, and continuous monitoring. The organizations that ignore AI security will learn the hard way that convenience without controls is a liability.
